Dojenački botulizam je bolest do koje dolazi kada novorođenče unese bakteriju koja proizvodi toksin unutar tijela. Riječ je o veoma opasnoj infekciji crevnog trakta. Sve je više dokaza koji govore da med može biti uzročnik ovog tipa botulizma.

Med je poznati izvor spora koje stvaraju bakterije Clostridium botulinum. Kada ih dojenče unese u organizam, ove bakterije proizvode toksin koji uzrokuje dojenački botulizam, ozbiljno, ali na svu sreću rijetko trovanje hranom. Stoga se djeci mlađoj od 12 mjeseci nikada ne smije davati med.
Dojenački botulizam nije nimalo bezopasna bolest jer napada nervni sistem bebe i u najtežim slučajevima može čak uzrokovati smrt. Međutim, većina se beba uspije oporaviti. Najčešći znaci i simptomi botulizma su:
– trajni zatvor (konstipacija);
– omlitavljene ruke, noge i vrat;
– slabašan plač zbog slabosti mišića;
– poteškoće u dojenju, beba nema snage da izvuče mlijeko;
– izražen umor odojčeta (stalna pospanost);
– poteškoće u disanju
